Recording audio to iPhone 13 Pro Max with dual external microphones

I'm able to record audio JUST FINE to the iPhone with a single external mic, but I'd like to be able to use dual external mics.

Do I need just a simple Y splitter (TRS to TRRS) that I can plug into the Apple 3.5mm to Lightning adapter?

Or do I need one of those $70 RODE (or other) dual-input 3.5mm boxes?

I'll be recording on XLR mics, using a couple of IK 48v phantom power supplies with 3.5mm output.

THANKS!
