1/ On the Airplay -->Security page of the ATV, no codes or passwords are required, so the 4-digit pairing code should not be asked for, correct?

It will still need the pairing code, unless you allow Everyone, iirc.

2/ … to find "new" or current Airplay devices on my wifi network

The search and detection or AirPlay device is live, and should normally always show what is presently available to stream to.

3/ In the ATV's Airplay settings, under Speakers I do see my (current) "Apple TV" and also my (previous) "Living Room" options listed. But the older one, Living Room, has a lock icon next to it. Why?

The lock icon represents a password requirement, I believe.

2/ On the About page on the ATV, the Activation field says Failed. What does this mean?

Oh, that is a significant error, that makes all the difference. Once you fix the Activation Failed error, then you are expected to have working AirPlay again as well.

Try these steps: If you can't connect to the App Store, iTunes Store, or other Apple services - Apple Support

If the issue persists, contact Apple Support.

What is your model Apple TV? Identify your Apple TV model - Apple Support

Do you see it listed in your iPhone when selecting an AirPlay destination device?

  • When trying to use AirPlay, you might be asked for a 4-digit pairing code. This will appear on one device, to be copied to the other.
  • When trying to use AirPlay, you might be asked for a password. This will need to be set up on the AirPlay destination device.

Thanks for replying.

My ATV is 3rd Gen. (A1427), build 8.4.4, running 7.8 software.

My iPhone XR is running iOS 14.8.1

My MacBook Pro is running OS 10.14.6

All devices are signed in to my iCloud/Apple ID and all are on the same wifi network.

2/ I just updated the ATV software, then named it Apple TV instead of previous name of Living Room. But when asking for the code (that never actually appears) my iPhone's Airplay and Mirroring pages show only the device previously known as Living Room; therefore I suspect my iPhone is looking for a "different" ATV (previous to recent s/w update). It thinks the older s/w version previously named Living Room is the device I'm trying to Airplay. I have tried connecting to both to no avail.

I wish I knew how to "reset" my iPhone and MacBook Pro to find "new" or current Airplay devices on my wifi network - is there a way to force this? Can I ask my devices to look for new Airplay devices on the network, and connect to them? How?

btw I found lots of other folks with this same Airplay issue -- over 650 on one thread.

Thank you.

A failed activation on ATV 3 following a software update seems to be a widespread problem as seen elsewhere on these forums. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do to get it to activate -- is that an automatic process?

I tried a reset, to no avail. I would have thought a s/w update and reset would have helped. I will try full restore, next. Will report back
