One possibility is that the website has blocked airplay. If you know how to inspect the webpage and you see the following in the video player tag it means the web developers have explicitly blocked airplay:

x-webkit-airplay="deny"

I might have just been lucky...but...

I had the video steaming on my phone, then turned on screen sharing and got the same black screen and red circle slash.

I stopped the video on my phone and then reloaded the website by just clicking the circular arrow in the white field at the bottom of the screen.

When it reloaded it the screen sharing, which was still on, started to work. Then on my phone I selected full screen mode icon in the video stream and hey presto! It worked.

So it makes me wonder if the order is important. Screen sharing 1st, launch stream 2nd, full screen 3rd.

I suspect this is DRM related. I've only seen that tiny red null sign when trying to stream from a www site that streams a few Cable News stations, surrounded by adverts, that people usually pay subscription fees to view.

My Apple TV 4K refuses to play these 'pirate streams' via AirPlay (initiated from MacOS or iPadOS), whereas the native AirPlay 2 receiver on my LG TV cheerfully played it.

Hello and welcome to Apple Support Communities, Joe Livingston,

If we understand your post correctly, you're trying use AirPlay to stream video to your Apple TV and getting a red no symbol. We’d like to help.

We see you were viewing "If screen mirroring or streaming isn't working on your AirPlay-compatible device - Apple Support" which was a great place to start.

  1. Which device and software version are you trying to stream from?
  2. Does the video play on that device when you're not using AirPlay? If the video won't play on the device at all, use the steps for your device: If Safari isn't loading websites or quits on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support or If Safari on Mac doesn't open a webpage or isn’t working as expected - Apple Support
  3. Are you able to use AirPlay to play any videos from your Apple TV?

Let us know what you find.

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities.
