Thunderbolt adaptor

I need an adaptor to connect a male thunderbolt to the new female Macbook Air port for dual-screen display- what adaptor do I need? The laptop is a new Macbook Air and the display is an older Mac Monitor - please help! I have bought 2 so far and they're both wrong!
