mirroring and have sound but no picture

I only have internet at my short term rental and would like to watch live sports. I launch the NFL or ESPN apps on my iPad 6th Generation or iPhone11 and they recognize my AppleTV but I only get sound, no picture. I've gone through the AppleTV settings and don't see any restrictions. After searching, I've come here to ask for advice.
