So the APPLE gift card says to go to apple.com/redeem for online purchases ------ but it doesn't say for online purchases in ITUNES ONLY!!!! So once the money is put in your iTunes account how can you use it to purchase apple products? I spent more than an hour on the phone with 5 apple representatives who all said it could be done - but didn't know how. Seriously!

When you redeem a gift card, verify immediately that your Apple ID balance has been incremented by the amount of the card. Then, you can throw the card away. Once the card is redeemed, it has no further value!
With the funds in your Apple ID balance you can make purchases at apple.com. When you get to the checkout step, it will ask whether you want to apply your Apple ID balance or use a credit card.

You can use your Apple ID balance to buy products as well as downloads. See information in here:
Please note -- as my contribution (which hopefully you will read despite it not being recommended) was trying to illustrate -- I think the crux of the matter may lie in where you are located. Apple Account balance cannot be used in all countries for Apple Store purchases. There's also a difference between an Apple gift card and the Apple Gift Card.

if the amount of the redeemed gift card went into your Apple ID balance, and the item you bought was for yourself, not a gift for someone, then my understanding (from the documents linked) is that the Apple ID balance should be used. If that did not happen, contact Apple Support: Get Support
That’s what they SAY but each time I try to use it for a product purchase I’m told the gift card has been redeemed... then I explain it’s in my Apple account... and they say oh yeah we see it but it’s in your ITUNES account!
I added my Apple Gift to my iTunes account (only place I could fine to do so). I was buying books with it. I just made a purchase and it was charged to my credit card. Went to i-Tunes to check on the gift card/amount and it is not there in payment methods.
Unfortunately, as instructed I destroyed the card itself once it was downloaded to my account so no longer have # or pin. Where has the card and my $25.00 gone? When I do have an Apple Gift for Anything Card, where do I redeem it?

When you redeem the gift card, the amount is added to your Apple ID balance. You no longer need the card itself.
When you make a purchase, the amount will be paid from your Apple ID balance first. The exception is when you purchase a gift (Merry Christmas!) in which case a credit card is needed.

The problem is that I added the Apple Gift card to my iTunes account and it showed $25.00 accepted. A few days later, when I bought a book via Apple Books, my credit card was charged. When I tried to check my gift card balance, no card appears. It seems books no longer show in iTunes as they did before. Following the link provided, the gift card is not included in payment options. I cannot reload the card as I discarded the card & pin once the $25.00 credit appeared on screen in iTunes. Where did it go?
