Several apps start up when I login. I've tried clicking on the app and unchecking it but most are not checked to start up upon login. iMap will not uncheck launch upon login. How can I stop these unwanted apps from launching.

Hello, methrice.

Sorry that you're having this trouble.

You can check what items are in the User's log in items by going to System Preferences > Users & Groups and looking at Login Items list there. If there are any that you don't wish to be opening, then click to select and then click the remove ( – ) button below. You my have to unlock the panel first (lock icon at the lower left).

Remove login items to resolve startup problems on you Mac - Apple Support

Also, when shutting down your Mac, you may be prompted to reopen apps and windows on restart or login. Ensure that check box is not marked before you proceed.

And finally, when you shut down, enable that you have quit any apps that you do not wish to have reopen when you restart.

Well, I'm disappointed that was not helpful.

Still, I do have another suggestion.

If rebooting your Mac doesn’t fix things, see if the problem still happens in Safe mode (hold the shift key down at startup). It can take much longer to safe boot (10 min) so be patient.

How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

Safe mode disables loading third-party drivers, forces the OS to clear certain caches and logs and does other miscellaneous housekeeping. It's non-destructive to user data so is safe to do. Very often weird software behavior is corrected by simply logging in this way as a troubleshooting method. When you're in safe boot, the machine will not be at its best performance, especially with graphics, but that's expected.

Does the problem persist while in Safe mode?

Exit safe mode by restarting your Mac normally and re-evaluate the issue again.

Again, thank you so much for your time and patience. Holding down the shift key did work but when I boot up again without holding down the shift key, the problem returned. One thing changed though. I was able to un-check the option of opening upon login. So thanks for your help. I do appreciate it. Just one more thought.....I believe that when I got my first Apple computer back in the 1980s, we'd hold down the shift key to 'clean up the desktop'. I may be remembering wrong...... my memory is getting shaky!

Thank you so much for trying to assist me. I've read what you suggested and tried that a prior to presenting this question to the apple community. The problem is, I only have iMaps check and for some reason I CAN'T uncheck it. I have nothing else in the launch with login file. Nothing is checked to launch with login. That's the problem. Any other suggestions?
