Check that message again, usually the notification should be "AirTag Found Moving With You" rather than airpod.
If so, check this article > What to do if you find an AirTag or get an alert that an AirTag is with you - Apple Support
You may have accidentally bagged someone's airtag.

My wife has received the same message referring to AirPods (not AirTag), so the message is legit.
In our case, I think I know why this happened.
I was helping her with her malfunctioning AirPods that needed to be reset. When I set them up again, I was using my iPhone - so as a result, I guess the AirPods were thinking that I was the owner, not my wife.
So the next time she went on a run (using her AirPods and also having her iPhone with her), she got home and then noticed the message on her phone.
Hope this helps!

You probably didn't know that AirPods has that feature too if it was connected to another icloud and wasn't signed out.
