Light Room Upgrade Older iMac

I have 2009 (late) iMac 21.5 inch 4gb. I am not allowed to upgrade to light room because I don't have the latest OS upgrade which they say is Catalina. Is it possible to change to 8 or more gb, and then get Catalina? Also change hard drive maybe? I am trying all options before I have to splash the cash.

Any help and or advice is appreciated.

Thanks people

From what I've read yes you can, but do you really want to? Your Mac is going on 13years old and considered obsolete by Apple. You may get new RAM and a quick SSD installed, but the rest of it is still over 12 years old. It's had a good run, end of life is approaching fast if not already here in terms of years.
