You will usually connect to the internet via your WiFi connection:

Connect to Wi-Fi on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

You might optionally consider a Cellular connection - either directly if you have a WiFi+Cellular model of iPad - or via a hotspot (such as an iPhone or MiFi Cellular Router).
