It does appear, and syncs fine. When I click on it in the sidebar to view the sync progress, the image of the phone at the top of the finder window has a ? mark over it. It correctly shows a red iPhone, though. I just don’t know why it has the ? on it.

It looks as if something has gone wrong with "Customise Toolbar". Try re-doing this: with the relevant Finder window at the front, choose "Customise Toolbar…" from the "View" menu. Then "drag the default set" to the window toolbar, and select "Icon Only" in the "Show" pop-up. Click "Done" and your question mark should be gone.
