Thunderbolt for MacBook A1398

MacBook Pro is:

MODEL A1398 EMC2876

OSX YOSEMITE VERSION 10.10

MACBOOK PRO (RETINA 15-INCH , MID 2014

SERIAL NUMBER: C0***3QC

I found there are two USB ports showing in the specs up to 5Gbps. Is there a specific Thunderbolt cable I need to choice that fits this model. I see Thunderbolt Thunderbolt 2 and other Thunderbolt cables listed.

Thanks for any advise on making the cable selection that will work with MacBook Pro connecting a

Blu Ray player.

Sincerely

The laptop has USB3 ports which only support the USB protocol.

The laptop also has two Thunderbolt 2 ports which only support the Thunderbolt protocol and can be used for displays with an mini-Display port adapter.

If your external device requires the USB protocol, then connect it to the USB3 port. If the external device supports the Thunderbolt protocol, then use the Thunderbolt port.

If your external device only has USB-C ports, then you need to know which protocol the device supports and use the appropriate adapter to connect the device to the older laptop (USB-C to USB-A for USB protocol, or USB-C to Thunderbolt 2 for the Thunderbolt protocol).

Only on the 2016+ Mac with the USB-C ports does a single port support both the Thunderbolt 3 protocol and USB 3 protocols.

Hello

this MacBook Pro 2,1 2014 is what my retired friend is using to preserve his legacy of video files.

He is using a OWC Mercury Pro to copy MOV files to 100GB M Disc.

The copy fails. I found out that's because he is using a port other than Thunderbolt.

If he plays a video from OWC MPro the films splutters, audio drops out.

If this fellow had a new MacBook Pro with possibly Thunderbolt 3, 4 ports then buying a replacement would solve his difficulties.

Considering his work is using Blu Ray devices such as OWC Mercury Pro what used model of MacBook would be helpful,

would be a suitable replacement for his legacy MacBook?

Thanks for any comments!
