Can I buy an SD card to have more space for an update?

You can buy an SD card sure, and use it with an external SD card reader, but if you were planning on installing it in the iPhone, that is not possible. iPhones have no place to insert an SD card.
You can use one of these to access the SD card in the Files App on your iPhone:

You can move items off of the iPhone onto the SD card to make room for the update.
