imessage on my mac stopped working
My imessage on my mac book air stopped working. The green line at the top goes across then stops before getting to the end. I think it is timing out. Any ideas?

Since the line is green, it implies you're using text message forwarding: Learn how to forward SMS/MMS text messages from your iPhone to your Mac.
Refer to this recent Discussion to determine if that solution works for you: text messaging.
Here is the relevant excerpt:
First try "signing out" of your iCloud Account in the Messages app. Refer to Stop using iMessage in Set up Messages on Mac.
Then, "sign in" again following the instructions under Set up iMessage in that same document.
Be sure to review all the links in that document to be sure you don't overlook anything. There are a lot of requirements.
It's equally important that your iPhone has been configured to forward text messages to your Mac, because SMS / MMS text messages can only be sent to and from phones. Your iPhone subsequently "forwards" those messages to your Mac, and (conversely) sends text messages that you compose on your Mac. To review all those requirements, please read How to forward SMS/MMS text messages from your iPhone to your iPad, iPod touch or Mac.
If all else fails, "signing out" of iCloud completely on both devices, followed by "signing in" again may be justified.
Strictly speaking text message forwarding is not Apple's proprietary iMessage service. I mention that only to prevent possible confusion regarding terminology. On the other hand if the line is blue that comment as well as the above Discussion are not relevant.
