Ensure that when you are installing the OS, the Mac has a connection to the internet. The best connection will be via an ethernet cable to your router, but a solid wi-fi connection can also be used. If relying on wi-fi, check the upper right corner of your screen for the wi-fi icon. Click that to select your network and make the connection.
