I just purchased an new iMac 2021 with Monterey. TimeMachine backup on RaspberryPi seems to be oké. No error messages and checking backups are also fine.
But when I activate TimeMachine, it always opens with the desktop folder. E.g. when the mail application is active, TM opens with the desktop folder and no mails are visible. So, I can’t restore any mails.
Anyone a solution?

You have to open the folder where the item is situated and then open Time Machine. Select the item (it can be a folder) and then click Restore. You will have an alert about the "Enclosing Folder", choose "Select Location" (or words to that effect) and navigate to where you want it to go.

Yes, when I open a folder in Finder and activate TimeMachine it opens with that folder. But when I first open mail and then activate TimeMachine, it still opens with the folder in Finder. Since I can't see any mails in TM, I am not able to restore (individual) emails.
There is one way. Your email is stored in your library/mail/V directory. The issue is how to find a specific email as it does not keep easy to read titles. It is easier to restore an entire mailbox. In Finder select option, Go at the top and then select library. Go to mail/V (could be V8 or V9, etc.) Look for folders with cryptic titles and in one or more of those you will find your email folders. You have to work your way down the file structure to get what you are looking for.
TM no linger supports the mail app. since Catalina and with Monterey it will not even shown the mail screen. You will need to install a third party app to keep track of your emails like MailBackupX.
Okey, that is new to me. So there is no option to backup emails and to recover earlier deleted emails (apple deletes deleted amails after one week or so)?
