Why can't I power HomePod mini from MacBook Air PSU?

I have too many wall-warts near my desk that have USB-C connectors. These power MacBook Air (2020) and a pair of HomePod minis.

I thought I might get a multi-port PSU, but tested first by plugging one of my HomePods into the MacBook PSU. That's in theory 30W, and 20W (or possibly even 18W) should be enough, but no dice.

This came as a surprise to me and makes me doubt if my cunning plan could work.

Any ideas why?

I believe MBA's power adapter is putting out around 18.5V whereas the HomePod mini uses 9V.
