Apple mail does not make it clear how to setup a POP account. You need to select other and then put in a bogus email and/or PW then the next screen will give you a choice to set up a POP account. However, many if not all providers now want to use a new PW that they generate for POP account. You will need to go the provider's email web site to get the PW and follow the install process. Much easier to setup an IMAP account.
Your email provider problem provides instruction for setting up Apple Mail. Have you went to your providers support site?
Who is you email provider?
DO you have an option to set it up as IMAP? That is better for accessing mail from different devices.
My email provider gives me detailed instructions abut configuration. The problem is that Apple Mail software is too simplistic/limited to insert those details; for example: encryption type, ports, etc.
OK, at least the IMAP account works. I wanted to use a POP3 account so I could delete messages after reading them; a little harder to do with an IMAP account.
