Yes, you must use Double Click to active Apple Pay as you have learned. There is no getting away from either using FaceID or your passcode to authenticate your identification.

There is an easer way and that is with an Apple Watch. A double click is involved to activate Apple Pay, however no Face ID or passcode is needed since the watch is on your wrist and authenticated.

You are correct. The option to press the Side Button Twice to activate Apple Pay instantly can be turned OFF in settings. If you turn it OFF then you will not be able to pull up Apple Pay instantly from ANY screen.

If you turn that setting OFF, then you will have to open the Wallet app first and then Double Click the Side Button regardless to activate Apple Pay. Leaving that setting to ON is a feature of convenience to instantly activate Apple Pay from any screen.

Thanks Alex. I need to clarify my question. Particularly using a mask, and with Plexiglas screens in place often I find it awkward to place the iPhone correctly over the reader. I have Face ID set but the mask baffles it, so I have to enter my code, place the phone, double-click, but often have to redo various steps. What is the simplest process? Must I use the double click which I find difficult in these circumstances? Thanks.

Hello Alex, sorry to persist but I’d like to use Apple Pay and am still not sure what is the easiest way. I have no problem using Face ID or passcode. The issue is the side button double click that I find awkward. If as you say I must use Double Click I don’t understand why it is an option in Settings, the button can be on or off? Thanks again, Patrick
