new ipad cannot open
mail is grey & no mail shows inbox, sent, draft, etc when I try to open mail in app

If you're sure you added email account correctly in Apple Mail app, check:
Settings>Screen Time>Content & Privacy Restrictions>Allowed Apps>.... Mail must be ON (green). When done, restart your device.
If you mean something different, please specify your needs/problems better.

I have checked as you suggested Giulio. In settings….Mail is on (green).
ipad then appears to be working on retrieving mail as additional mail icon appears with battery symbol. Then disappears? Mail screen remains empty & grey.

I have checked again. I have lodged incorrect email address!!! What a rookie mistake. Now how do I delete incorrect address and replace with correct address? Cheers JillE
