cannot detect new time machine

I bought a new time machine cos the old one suddenly doens't work. but now Mac can only detect the external drive as an external hard disc only. when I open the time machine app, it only show previous backup. how can I use the new time machine as a time machine?

You don't buy a TimeMachine, you buy an external drive and set it up as a TimeMachine.
