External HD for Time Machine under Monterey

How can I add an external HD (FireWire) to a new iMac (24", M1) OS Monterey?

I cannot erase the HD - always get error, the operation failed. I cannot mount the disk4s3.

TimeMachine does not recognise the disk -how can I install Time Machine?

External Hard Drive Recognized as Time Machine Format Years ago, I used this external hard drive to backup my Mac, and when I wanted to use the hard drive for normal file storage again, I just deleted all the backup files off the drive. Bad decision, this didn't completely format the hard drive of it being recognized with Time Machine. Every time I plug it into my mac, it has the Time Machine logo, and it only works on Macs, no Windows computers. I would like to have it be recognized on every computer, but I don't want to format it of its data nor do I have a place to store all its contents so I can format it. Any other solutions?

How do I use Time Machine using the internal hard drive on my Mac? I don’t have the ability to get an external hard drive. When I tried it tells me that APFS or whatever it’s called is corrupted and to repair start up volume from recovery mode to run first aid. I’m in recovery mode and idk what I’m doing. I’m not very good at all this stuff. I need layman’s terms please.

cannot detect new time machine I bought a new time machine cos the old one suddenly doens't work. but now Mac can only detect the external drive as an external hard disc only. when I open the time machine app, it only show previous backup. how can I use the new time machine as a time machine?

If you use a Hub try plugging the drive into the USB port on its own

As Mal-S says with the proper simple pass through adapter if needed.
