touch screen unresponsive on wake iphone X

Since updating to iOS 15.1 (although this might be a coincidence) my iPhone X touch screen has been unresponsive on wake sometimes, especially when the phone has been in my pocket (and much less when it has been sitting on a surface). The screen does light up when I push the side button or raise it, and animations like the opening FaceID lock, carrier ID in the top left and shifting background as I tilt the phone still work, as well as volume and play/pause from tapping an AirPod. I can reset the phone with the side buttons and this sometimes solves the problem, as does waiting a few minutes. Any idea what might be up or things to try? I got the display unit replaced in September as well, so it's fresh-ish but might be a lemon?

It is most likely a coincidence.

You may have a hardware problem

First try a forced restart

If that does not help the next procedure would be to backup then restore your device to factory, and setup the device without restoring a backup, to see if the issue is replicated.

Then restore the backup.

If you need to send the phone in for repair then backing up and restoring to factory would be needed anyway.

Remove SIM PIN if you have set one

(2) Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings – Apple Support

Set up as new from the Hello Screen without restoring backup. Test if the problem still exists

If the problem goes away in the newly set up phone then suspect settings or apps.

If the problem remains then arrange a repair including details of these tests.
