when I bought my MacBook Air, I thought I was told I received 6 months free of Apple TV but im not sure how to find out if that is true. can you help?

Mac purchases are (were) eligible for an offer for an extended free trial to Apple TV+, if the user is eligible as well.

That offer has to be redeemed within the first three months.

There now is a 3 months offer. There are also offers from partners for various durations, but those are unrelated to the purchase of a Mac. Not sure where you think you saw or heard about 6 months.
