Anytime I am in the messages app on the message list, I get this message: “Uploading to iCloud Paused - Plug in your device and connect to WiFi”

Your Messages are being synced to iCloud. Do you use iCloud and iCloud for Messages? If YES, then your iPhone is attempting to synch your Messages to iCloud, however, it can only be completed when your iPhone is connected to a Wi-Fi Network. Generally, this function will work well at night when your iPhone is idle and connected to Power and the Wi-Fi Network.
