My MacMini runs very slow

My MacMini runs very slow. Late 2014 version. Processor 1.4 GHZ Duel Core Intel Core I5.Memory 8 GB.

1600 MHZ DDR3, Graphics 5000 1536 MB. 500 GB hard drive.

What could be some of the causes for this? Been running slow almost shorting after buying it from Apple 4 years ago.

Thanks Buzz2552

Hello Dialabrain,

Good point. This MacMini was my first Mac. I use AutoCad 2019 student version on it and it works good especially now for Home projects.

So what do you recommend in terms of a new computer? another MacMini with the M1 chip, or the new iMac? And if I should decide will migration bring over all my existing software over to the new computer including AutoCad? or do recommend something else?

Well, your mini has the slowest CPU available at the time, the slowest 5400rpm HDD, base GPU. All of which doesn't help.

However, post an etrecheck report. It might show other issues.

Install EtreCheck and post the report. Allow Full Disk Access.

Use the Additional Text icon to paste in the report.

Thank you Mr Phillips,

I used and installed etrecheck. Very thorough, and very helpful to say the least. It helped me to better understand how much I didn't know before what going on in my Mac-Mini. after following the suggestions on my issues, what a difference in performance.

The speed and response is incredible.

Thank you again Sir. You have been very helpful.

Funny story with EtreCheck and that computer.

Back in 2014, there were a number of stories about various escapades taking place in Apple Stores, like performance art or people shooting independent movies. I was just wrapping up a major new version of EtreCheck and thought I would go into an Apple Store and see if I could test it on a few of the new computers.

It turned out that Apple was much more accommodating to performance artists and independent filmmakers than software developers. Before they threw me out, I did get a chance to test EtreCheck on this Mac mini. I thought I had found a major bug because it seemed like EtreCheck wasn't working at all. It had just locked up. But no, that computer was just really, really slow.

If one moves to the new Apple Silicon of whatever configuration and type - be cautious able using Migration Assist to move all the previous software, extensions, Application etc over to the new machine.

1 - one must factor in the differences between Intel Based and Apple Silicon based computers

2 - any unresolved issue existing when the Time Machine Backup was made of the Old computer may migrate to the new computer. This would effectively negate an otherwise Pristine and Virginal installation of Monterey.

3 - though the old may be running the same version of macOS - Applications are best installed directly from the Developer versus migrating from the old system

4 - IMHO - if using Migration Assist to setup the new Apple Silicon - suggest only migrating the User Account and nothing more.
