iMac data recovery

On re-installation of OS by the designated workshop, I need to recover data from my previous Apple ID account.

How do I log in with Apple ID, sign in tab in System Preference - Users & groups does not appear.
Recover data ( photos ) from the computer? Really possible?

Hi Keith

1. I was locked out of the system that necessitated reinstalling OS at the Apple Service Centre.

2. System backup is held in an external drive, last back having been taken six months back.
