Updated MBP - Mouse no longer works

My MBP13 updated this morning (Dec-8-2021 to macOS Catalina 10.15.7). Now that the update has completed and the system restarted, the USB ports no longer function.

Any help or guidance on this matter will be appreciated.

Hi Mr_Hume,

Welcome to the Apple Community.

You may want to try resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

Apple Support have an article online (link below) to help with that.

Resetting the system management controller (SMC) can resolve certain issues,

related to power, battery, fans, and other features.

How to reset the SMC of your Mac (Intel processor)

(NB: 13" MacBook Pro 2018 - 2020 has the T2 chip ...

else follow the steps for other models ... ie: for those with removable, or unremovable battery )

Hope this works for you :-)

Thank you for sharing your experience, Mr_Hume.

Technology is well-known for producing "bugs", however carefully the developers aim to produce "bug-free" products.

Apple may trial beta-versions with those willing to help spot bugs before the general release takes place.

Undoubtedly "bugs" do show up after some major Apple upgrades, although not always uniformly.

Some of us may hold back on an upgrade, until any bugs have come to light, and been solved in an updated version, or two.

Apple do have an avenue for feedback,

and if enough people send feedback on a bug / issue, it can help promote change in the next update..

Here's the webpage for sending feedback:

Thank you again, for contributing to the Apple Communities.

Cheers :-)

Hey brbo,

Thanks for the reply.

I spent the entire day troubleshooting this with Apple Technicians/Support, to no resolution. (All the cookie cutter suggestions were exhausted).

Full disclosure, I am no expert on Apple products (no manufacturer's to be honest). However, I have a degree in Computer Science and a Masters degree (Innovation, Manufacturing Management and Entrepreneurship), so I know a little bit about research and investigating problems. So I wasted an entire day trying to get to the bottom of the issue, and I believe I have.

I was advised by the technicians to reinstall the operating system, which was done twice to no avail. Once the reinstalls brought no resolution, it is obvious that the problem is either the physical hardware or firmware related.

To cut a long story short, I extracted the hard drive and did some research and wiped it. The original default operating system once reinstalled, was then able to immediately detect, engage in corrective action, and relay a useful message to me as a user, pin pointing the issue with the USB ports. This is something that the current MacOS system, after two reinstalls, was never able to do. (And I do not fault the system - that is by design).

What then is the value of the latest OS if it can 'fail' at something so trivial? Where is promise of improvement?

On this ten year old OS, now a single USB port works fine, and I am 100% sure what is wrong with the other, and I can actually use the MBP. However it cannot be udated due to the App Store blocking access to the current version of the operating system. Lol. Naturally, since the next step was to re-update it to see if the problem re-occurred, which I will do as soon as I figure out how to update the system. (This is the researcher in me :-) )

Thanks for the reply though.

Take care !

Hey brbo,

Just replying for information purposes.

I spent some considerable time reasearching and analyzing the issue. I was able to reload macOS Catalina onto the MBP, (after great difficulty and jumping through tons of hoops). Predictably, the machine lost USB functionality again, (plus there was another , hardware failure I choose not to discuss at this point in time).

I have concluded my work and have a clearer idea as to what happened during the MacOS update (or anytime the MBP visits Apple's update server). I will be writing a paper on it in the near future. (not restricted to Apple).

Apple is venturing down a very dark and twisted path, that will yield a lot of cash in the short term, but will inevitably lead to a catastrophic 'update' in the future.

A mind that deliberately conceives to do wrong, will become accostomed to doing wrong, and one day cease to do good.

A word to the wise is sufficient.

I think that is it. :-)
