Sending iPad and iPhone photos via email as an attached JPEG file and not embedded in the body of the email.

I am still struggling with sending iPad and iPhone photos via email as an attached JPEG file and not embedded in the body of the email. I’ve tried using the “automatic” button under settings>photos and the “most compatible” button under settings>camera>formats on both devices but they still embed the photo in the email as opposed to attaching it. Certainly Apple is aware of this problem as I see that the same issue has been around for years.

I recall that previous IOS systems provided a “send as an attachment” button when sharing but that feature has since been long gone. Sure makes it impossible to use the photos for any other type application like a power point presentation or article. Not interested in a 3rd party app to fix this.

Hopefully somebody out there has figured it out.

I realize that if I go through the additional steps of also saving the photo in files and locating it again that it would sometimes (but not always) allow me to send/forward it via email as a jpeg. But that work around to a fundamental Apple mail issue was a real pain and too time consuming for my liking.

I solved this problem myself yesterday by switching from the Apple mail system and going to and using the Outlook mail system. The transition was seamless after downloading the app on both my iPhone and iPad. When using Outlook any and all photos are always attached as a jpeg

I hope that all the other users over years that have had this same problem see this string and see this as the most practical solution.

And shame on Apple for ignoring this plight and forcing their customers to just accept and use their flawed system.

Hello BFDolan,

We understand when adding a photo to an email it's added into the body instead of an attachment. We'd be happy to help!

If you're adding the photos from the Photos app, what you're experiencing is normal behavior. If you'd like to add an attachment, check out the following resource: Add attachments to an email on iPhone.

We hope this helps!

Hello BFDolan,

As we stated previously, if the photo you're adding is in your Photos app, you are experiencing normal behavior. If the photo is in your Files folder, you can following the guidance provided in the article, tap on the arrow twice and you should see the option to attach a file. However, since it is a photo, there is a likely chance it will continue to appear in the body of the email.

We'd also like to share, if the photos was taken with your iOS device, photos are captured in HEIF or HEVC format. you can learn more about this here: Using HEIF or HEVC media on Apple devices.

Take care!

Sorry this did not help or solve the problem. The little arrow < only allowed me to insert the photo into the body of the email and does not allow me to actually attach it as a jpeg file. On the receiving end on my PC it is photo in the body of the email and I can only copy the image and paste it up to Word. It is not a jpeg or png file.

There has to be a way to fix this. Others I know with iPhones can do it but they don’t know why or what I need to do differently.
