Can I delete OneDrive from MacBook Air without it deleting iPhone OneDrive app?

When COVID lockdown started last year, I installed Office 365 and OneDrive on my personal home MacBook Air (currently v. 12.0.1). I also installed several of the Office 365 apps, including OneDrive, on my iPhone 12 Pro Max (iOS 15.1.1).

I would like to uninstall OneDrive from my MacBook because it is syncing/downloading all my work files to my hard drive, taking up a ton of storage space. I don't need those on my personal laptop. But I would like to still be able to access them from the cloud using my iPhone.

Can I delete OneDrive from my MacBook while leaving the app functioning on my iPhone? Thanks.

Yes, you can do that. To be on the safe side, I'd suggest you unlink the account on your Mac first:

  1. In the menu bar, click the OneDrive icon.
  2. Choose Preferences.
  3. Click the Account tab.
  4. Click Unlink Account, and confirm as necessary.

Now you can uninstall OneDrive (just drag the app to the Trash).

Finally, move your OneDrive folder to the Trash and then empty it.

OneDrive puts an icon in the menu bar, top-right of the screen near the clock. It looks like a cloud. I think Microsoft has changed the interface at least once, and I don't have it installed to test right now, but I've no doubt that what Lawrence says is correct for the current version i.e. click Help & Settings > Preferences. That'll teach me to give advice entirely from memory.

I really appreciate your efforts, and they look like they should work. I realize that I have OneDrive for Business. So it's (employer name)-mySharePoint.com. I wonder if that's why I'm not seeing a clock or a Help & Settings tab. I might need to bring this in to our company IT. Thanks again. :-)
