Messages app not requesting mic access

For the last two months my messages app has not recorded audio messages or Memoji messages. It will give me the option to record but will then play back with no sound.

I went into my privacy settings and the messages app isn’t even requesting mic access.

Are you able to use the microphones in other apps without an issue? Are other apps requesting microphone access? Control access to hardware features on iPhone
Are you using the steps outlined here to record an audio message? Send and receive photos, videos, and audio messages on iPhone
What is the exact iOS version your device is running at this time?
