Reformatting external hard drive on new MacBook

So my old MacBook finally died, got a new one. My Seagate worked fine both the old MacBook using NTFS and worked fine on my pc also. I plugged it into my new one and it takes about 20 minutes to open now and doesn't work well so I guess I have to reformat to Mac OS extended. Question is, if I put all my files, about 1TB of photos and a bunch of other junk on my other external hard drive formatted to Mac OS extended will it be able to read them? Is something done to the files that converts them so that they can only be read with NTFS or is it the hard drive only that matters? Has something been done to the files by NTFS that will now make them unreadable by MacOS extended? Thanks
