Forgot iCloud password on iPhone

Hello

We recently bought new iPhones and I need to clear out the old ones. My son created his own iCloud account but has since forgot his password so we cannot even recover the password. I need to clear out the phone but cannot because I cannot turn off find my phone without the password. It is an iPhone 8.
