The Apple ID that it was activated with is the key to this. If it is the same as your. current Apple ID then the current password will do the job. If it was an old Apple ID you no longer use then you can try to recover the password, but you need to know the Apple ID itself.

Or if you bought this from new from Apple and you have the receipt and some ID you might try to have Apple Store unlock it for you.
