I would have to say that you cannot get malware on your iPhone without user intervention. Many malicious people will use various systems to create messages/pop ups on your device that play on your fears to prompt you to do something that you wouldn’t otherwise do. Have you seen people mention messages like “Your phone is infected, download the fix now” and there is a link to download or install something? The malicious person cannot infect the device directly so they play on panic or fear to force you to download something that could infect your device.
The best rule is to avoid clicking on, or downloading something, unless you know exactly what the link/app is supposed to do as well as its source. If in doubt.. refuse to click or download.
