Using Safari only, you download it from here https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT211683 and it will be placed in the Applications folder.

From there you double click the installer app to launch the upgrade.

At this very moment, there appears to be some trouble with the downloads for High Sierra , Mojave, Catalina and Big Sur. You may have to allow some time for the problem to be fixed. Several hours to a day?

Notation 1 - getting an older version macOS can Only be done on an Apple Compute that qualifies to run the version to be downloaded.

Notation 2 - attempting to download an older version of macOS on a computer that came installed with a newer version of macOS than the one being or attempting to download - Will not be allowed as per the Apple Licence of Usage. Yes, one may just want to create a Bootable Installer for and older computer - but it can not be done on this computer

After some research, there appears to be a fix for some links to OS downloads that have been broken.

Pasting these into the Safari address bar works to get you to the App Store downloads…

Big Sur: macappstore://apps.apple.com/us/app/macos-big-sur/id1526878132?mt=12

Catalina: macappstore://apps.apple.com/us/app/macos-catalina/id1466841314?mt=12

Mojave: macappstore://apps.apple.com/us/app/macos-mojave/id1398502828?mt=12

High Sierra: macappstore://apps.apple.com/us/app/macos-high-sierra/id1246284741?mt=12
