iPad Unavailable Message

A friend Purchased my daughter this iPad got it all set up for her everything was working fine I am assuming that she messed up on her passcode many many times I do not have a computer available to re-start or any of that at the moment but instead of saying disabled it says iPad unavailable can anybody help me figure this out

not meaning to be rude tmoney, but in this fast-paced, constantly attention seeking world we live in where everyone wants their life, views & opinions, social life to be seen/heard, your angry/constructive feedback (and no doubt warranted) is a mere speck of dust that may catch someones attention for a couple of seconds. as much as we all think we are incredibly important and that everyone wants to listen to us, one thing to realise is.. really, no one cares.

Fixed it

Restoring the iPad (not update and restore) through iTunes solved the problem

I noticed before restoring my iPad - date and time had changed


  • turn off your ipad
  • connect your cable to pc/mac ( not iPad)
  • hold the home button on your ipad
  • connect the other end of the cable When you see the apple logo release the home button
  • your iPad will say connect to itunes
  • open the iTunes on your computer and select restore ( not update and restore) when the message pops up.
  • This will restore iPad -
  • YOU WILL LOSE ALL THE DATA ON YOUR IPAD
  • YOU WILL NEED THE APPLE ID AND PASSWORD USED BEFORE THE RESET

An iPad passcode cannot be recovered, reset or modified from another device. If your iPad is disabled, or you have forgotten your iPad passcode, you have no alternative other than to follow this process:

If you’ve forgotten the passcode on your iPad, or your iPad is disabled – Apple Support


You’ll need access to either a PC (with iTunes installed) or a Mac (with iTunes or Finder - as appropriate for the installed version of MacOS).

Download and use iTunes for Windows – Apple Support

Update to the latest version of iTunes – Apple Support


Use of a PC or Mac is unavoidable. If you don’t have access to a suitable computer of your own, that of a helpful friend or family member will suffice. Alternatively, the technicians at the Genius Bar of your local Apple Store will be delighted to assist.


You may also need your AppleID and associated password. If these have also been forgotten, they can be recovered here:

To recover your credentials, you’ll need access to one of the following:

  • Your primary email address mailbox that corresponds with your AppleID
  • Any of the secondary/recovery email addresses that should be configured for your AppleID account
  • Any of the trusted telephone numbers (fixed line or Cellular/Mobile) that are associated with your AppleID


Unless you AppleID account has not been fully/correctly configured, or has been seriously neglected, recovery of the AppleID and password should not be difficult.

When you recover access to your credentials, you would be well advised to log-in to your AppleID account from a web browser - and verify/update any email addresses and trusted telephone numbers:

With respect, that answer isn’t helpful in some situations. For instance, many of us are seeing “iPad Unavailable” in situations that have nothing to do with incorrect passwords and PIN codes…nor are we being prompted to do anything.


That’s the issue that some of us need resolving. I appreciate folks’ willingness to help but, so far, I haven’t seen anything applicable.

Welcome to my world! The Apple “support” I got for same issue was maddeningly INNACURATE! Everyone wants to assume you forgot your passcode. Uh, nope it isn’t that and passcode is useless and irrelevant because your iPad WON’T LET YOU ENTER IT! I especially love the paragraph that says “you no longer need a computer” then goes on to say “you’ll need a PC or Mac”- the ultimate example of an oxymoron! And many responses are audaciously smug while being useless at the same time! Mine is disabled now for the 2nd time in 3 weeks and after having gone to Apple for repair where I got ZERO answer on what was wrong to begin with. The problems started after last update. At least now I have my Mac working again so I’ll connect it. All I can tell you is good luck. If you don’t have access to a computer then you’ll have to take it in to Apple authorized dealer for repair. If I get mine working again after connecting to my Mac I will send real world advice. Sorry for your troubles as no one knows better than me the frustration of your iPad becoming disabled for the fun of it. For the record mine was simply sitting on a counter overnight when this happened. There were no attempts to enter the passcode that started the trouble.

To clear an Activation Lock, you will need the password of the associated Apple ID, or the original purchase receipt and matching photo ID and a discussion with Apple Support.


If this device was recently purchased and the seller is still available, contact the seller for remediation or for refund. A remote unlock using iCloud is available to the person with the Apple ID holding an Activation Lock, if they’re inclined to unlock this device.

Activation Lock is a theft deterrent mechanism. A theft deterrent that is easy to bypass would not be much of a deterrent. No, nobody here in the Apple discussion forums can help you clear Activation Lock. Only the previous owner, or Apple, can clear this lock. For Apple to clear the lock, you will have to provide a receipt with proof of original purchase and with matching serial number, and provide matching personal identification, or similar materials.

Same issue here, my 3 years old toddler messed many times wrong password with his sister's iPad Pro,(2017 2nd gen), when we found it under the sofa, the iPad Pro was disabled. On the screen it says iPad unavailable without the after *** minutes option. Tried connect with a computer with different Macs and Windows computer, no luck. I guess it is the charging port connectivity problem. However, the iPad could charge with no problem. Went to the Apple Store, they don't have a solution too, mentioned I need to replace the whole board including the motherboard to connect with a computer. The fee should be $700 plus tax. Yeah, we are amazed. For that amount of money, we could buy a new iPad, but our 2017 iPad pro is still in good shape. The apple technician said we could try to reset through wifi, but unfortunately there is no wifi on the iPad Unavailable screen, so even through find my iPhone app we can't erase the iPad because it was offline. Went to several third party store for a fix, they all don't have parts for the iPad Pro charging port. So the result is hilarious, we need either spend $700 plus to get the whole board replaced or buy a new iPad because my kid inputed the wrong password. BTW, we never use connect with a computer function in the past 5 years. The apple customer Service understand our situation, but they don't have any solution. We understand that Apple has nothing to do with this issue and will tell everybody I know not to change the password with their kid's iPad, you might end up lose your iPad even it is in good working conditions.

I'm experiencing this now. I have no iTunes, no Mac but I do have my apple ID and password but the device will not connect to wifi. All devices in the house are fine. I have to goto apple or best buy to wipe the device clean. Apple said no cost to do that but alot of my time. I think Apple is getting carried away with security. If I can reset based on my appleid/password what's the point. Selling this to my friend after it's reset. Going with Microsoft

If that previously-linked info fails, contact Apple Support. Could be failed hardware, certainly. Could be some other issue. Apple will gather related info, and discuss your options and alternatives. If it’s a new iPad, it’s usually under a hardware warranty for the first year.
