How to re-enable voice guidance after turning on Alerts Only

Using CarPlay, iOS 15.1.1, iPhone 12 Pro:

To see what would happen, I tapped "Alerts Only" from the CarPlay menu on my infotainment screen. I was hoping Siri would only tell me when I needed to turn; however, it completely stopped voice guidance.

Now I want to turn voice guidance back on, 'cause I'm having to look at the Maps app for every turn, which is dangerous in traffic. However, there's nothing in the CarPlay menu to turn it back on. (The "Alerts Only" option only appeared sporadically, but I haven't seen anything to turn off "Alerts Only".)

I've clicked around in the Maps app, but found nothing to re-activate the voice guidance there.

I've checked Settings for Maps, and there's nothing there to re-activate voice guidance.

What am I missing? Where do I turn the voice guidance back on?

Found it! Yay!

1) With the map in fullscreen mode on the infotainment screen

AND a route in progress

- tap the map itself: A volume icon appears on the right side of the map.

2) Tap the volume icon to choose between 3 sub-icons:

  • volume icon: turns on all voice guidance
  • volume icon with a triangle containing an exclamation mark: turns on voice alerts only
  • volume icon crossed out: turns off all voice guidance

Note:

"Voice alerts only" mode only gives voice notifications of suggested route changes or traffic issues coming up on your current route.

Also, with any of these options, Maps still shows the route you've requested. These volume icons only control whether Siri speaks (ie, provides voice guidance for) the turn-by-turn steps through the route.

Hello again lisfolks,

Thanks for the follow-up info. Let's confirm a couple more iPhone settings now. First, do you have Precise Location enabled in Location Services? Go to Settings > Maps > Location, and make sure that Precise Location is turned on. More info on that can be found here:

Next, we want to make sure that Spoken Directions is also turned on. Go to Settings > Maps > Spoken Directions, and confirm that the the option for Directions on Radio is set to On. Further details can be found here:
