Upgrading iPad for a new one

So I was given my mom’s old iPad after she passed away. It’s a 5th generation and I’ve had it for years but I was wonder if there was a way I could take it and get it upgraded for a newer version. I believe she originally got it’s from AT&T and it’s in perfect condition.
