Any glass screen protector will protect from scratches and chips and is recommended by most of us. Performance will be unaffected if you get a protector from Apple.com but I have had no problem with £$2 eBay glass protectors.
If you fit it yourself, align it on the phone and scotch tape it down one side, open out, wipe the screen with the wipe, remove the backing then gently fold it down.
