To check for software updates on your Mac, look in these places (when your Mac is connected to the Internet):

If Software Update doesn't appear in System Preferences, your Mac is running macOS High Sierra or earlier. To check if your Mac is compatible with newer versions of macOS, check the Update tab in the Mac App Store.
