Is there a way to get more functionality from the remote? Like a channel back button or even the ability to go to a specific channel?

The software remote on iPhone has Channel-up/-down buttons for apps with ordered channels that have implemented support for this.

Some TV providers (Spectrum, Salt) have created a physical remote for Apple TV with a more traditional layout.
