I cannot find a way of accessing any setting that allows a 2.4ghz band to be selected instead of the 5 ghz band on an iPhone 12 with up to date iOS software. The normal (older?) way was via a control on the hot spot settings but this seems to have vanished. The requirement is to connect to a small Wifi interface that controls a music amplifier. help would be much appreciated as this is for a home bound person

It sounds like you are talking about the wifi band on the Personal Hotspot for other devices to connect to?
I believe the Settings, Personal Hotspot, Maximise compatibility will open up all protocols on iphone 12.

No - it’s not there, I was expecting a screen that looked like your screen shot but it’s definitely missing. Is there anyway the user (its not me btw) could have turned this off or lost the feature? Thanks for help btw
Unfortunately there are no optional settings at all visible when opening personal hot spot from settings, Hence my puzzlement and asking for help!!!

Turn off Screen Time completely
The most common culprit is Screen Time, followed by shape changers like VPN
that would be in Settings, Screen Time (turn it off) and Settings, General, VPN & device management.
