All notes missing

As of this morning, ALL my notes (and they were substantial!) in Notes are missing. What is going on? Anyone has an idea? This never happened before. Notes sync to iCloud and are backed up to Time Capsule. Have not yet attempted to restore from TC (also: how?) but am shocked to see that my notes have been completely wiped despite syncing to iCloud. Where are they? What now?

Alright, guys, here it is: had to consult an Apple senior engineer (the commendable Jason) to get my notes back. While the underlying problem remains unknown, below is a manual workaround to get the notes back using TC and some fiddling with files. Also, at the moment the problem occurred, the Notes app did not automatically sync to iCloud despite the option having been checked since long. Today I moved the content of Notes manually to iCloud (from within the Notes app) and with that it is supposed to properly sync to iCloud in the future.

Here is the workaround as I recall it:

macOS MOnterey: all notes missing from the Notes app (On My Mac)

  • Quit Notes app
  • Disconnect physical internet connection
  • Switch off WiFi
  • Go to: ~/Library/Group Containers —> group.com.apple.notes
  • Time Machine: restore suitable group.com.apple.notes
  • Copy NoteStore files (ALL THREE SIMULTANEOUSLY) from group.com.apple.notes to desktop, then move them to trash (DON’T EMPTY TRASH)
  • Reconnect internet connection
  • Switch on WiFi
  • Verify content of Notes (should be empty), quit app
  • Put back NoteStore files (ALL THREE SIMULTANEOUSLY), opt to replace existing ones
  • Uncheck, then recheck iCloud —> Notes
  • Open Notes (On My Mac), content should be restored

I have the terrible suspicion - though, at this point, I cannot be totally sure - that I made all the wind about missing notes for nothing. Consider the screenshot provided with this post...at first view it looks indeed like Notes is completely wiped with zero on iCloud and nothing visible under On My Mac. But when I point to On My Mac in the left side bar, an open triangle pointing right appears to the right - clicking on it, Notes appears underneath of it - clicking on Notes, all notes become visible on the right. I only realized this when I installed the recent Monterey update after I queried the community. After the install, I opened Notes and it looked like on the screenshot, seemingly blank again; only when I explored more closely the left side bar, it dawned on me what could have been going on. This having been said, it never ever happened before that after a system update to macOS, Notes appeared the way it does now after an update. Hence my initial panic and confusion. Hope this helps.

Folks, I am replying to myself - if you share the above problem, keep reading...

I followed a recommended procedure for restoring Notes from Time Capsule and got everything back. HOWEVER, short after I tested the reliability of the restore by restarting the computer upon which Notes crashed, issued an error report, and was again completely wiped. At this point, I will restore my notes again from TC and if Notes crashes again after restart, I'll post the error report here...
