How can we convince Apple we need a Focus that just turns off sound notifications but leaves the banners alone if we want to pick up our iPhone for a quick update on text-based activity?

That would probably have to do more with silent mode then DND. While there is currently no way to do this due to the hardware silent switch, you can certainly give this feedback to apple directly at apple.com/feedback .

How confident are you that that will only enable the show on lock screen and not turn on the sound? It seems like a good idea but I'm pretty annoyed at Apple at the moment. Thanks for the suggestion.

Sounds like Focus would be the perfect solution: Use Focus on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
Why not just use the silent mode switch? Thats what it's for.
Because I want to use the automatic schedule to turn the sound off rather than having to remember to turn it off and on again.
Focus is what they are using already.
You can't do that with Focus or Do Not Disturb.
Also because this is one of those update features that remove a useful feature. :-(
Actually, If you dont mind if the phone doesn't alert you immediately, you can enable a feature that lets you show silenced notifications on the lock screen
Try going to settings-focus-do not disturb (Or whatever focus you use)- lock screen and enable show on lock screen

Unfortunately not, but turning on that Focus setting I posted should help your issue.
