record audio in screenshot

when using screenshot to record a video in a portion or the screen the video is captured fine but there is no audio in the playback. Is there a way to capture the audio?

Im on a late 2014 Imac running Big Sur version 11.6.1

the previous article is essentially correct, but it's not as difficult as it appears in that article. the author just did it the hard way.

to record the mac's internal sound with quicktime you need additional software. i use the free BlackHole Virtual Audio Driver. then you can choose "BlackHole 2ch" in the recording options instead of "Built-in Microphone."

you will also need to set up a multi-output device in your audio MIDI setup utility to be able to both hear and record the internal audio at the same time.

to set up a multi-output device:

Open Audio MIDI Setup: (found in /Applications/Utilities)

hit the '+' button in the bottom left corner and select "Create Multi Output Device"

then in the panel that appears on the right, in the Multi-Output Device tab, select "Built-in Output" AND "BlackHole 2ch". (and, if you want, any of your other connected devices.)

once you do that, (and BEFORE recording) you can choose "BlackHole 2ch" or "Multi-Output Device" in your menubar "sound options".

to both hear the speakers and record the audio at the same time, choose "Multi-Output Device". before choosing multi-out, set the internal speakers' volume to a comfortable level first. you cannot control the volume once you are in multi-out mode.

from the article: This will open up the Audio Devices window. If BlackHole is installed successfully, you should see a “BlackHole 16ch” option from the sidebar on the left.

response: 2ch is stereo sound. for most users 16ch is unnecessary.

from the article: Doing that will make another option called “Aggregate Device” appears on the sidebar.

response: aggregate device not needed for screen recordings to capture the internal sound.

from the article: we need to change the output device under Sound settings. From the home screen, go to System Preferences —> Sound —> click on the Output tab. From the output list, select QuickTime Output, the same artificial sound device that we’ve just conceived earlier

response: you can do that with the sound options on the menubar. you don't need to go into system preferences each time.

I do not like posts just for the sake of posting.

If as you mention the article is correct then I do not see how you contribute by restricting the options.

Let me in turn just clarify myself:

2ch or 16ch does not provide any simplifacation of the installation. Its up to the user to decide what he prefers according to his needs. I myself selected 16ch and it works perfect.

Defining an Aggregate Device can be usefull if you want to record your video input together with your build-in microphone. Again it is up to the user to decide what he wants.

Yes you do not have to go to System Preferences to select your input, and you can do it via the menu bar, and you can even do it in the options of the screen capture app !!

It is not because we are only level 1 that we do not know how to handle the basics of our system.

I have no objection to different anwers as long as they are different and contribute to the solution, but lately I see too many posts in this forum who are just a repeat for the sake of posting, maybe in the hope to collect points. It clutters my Email when I try to follow interesting questions.

I will leave it by this, and hope the original poster will be able to solve her or his problem. I grant you the points if she or he does.

i don't care about points at all. if i did, i would have quit coming here long ago. a lot of people don't even realize they can reward us. a bunch of everyone's efforts go without points ever being rewarded. the only reason i participate here is to help others. and when i see a suggestion that i can add to and make it easier to implement, i'm gonna post. and that's all i did. if i offended you, i'm sorry.
