Double click for Apple Pay “passcode required” error

when I double click the side button to use Apple Pay, I see the message “passcode required” in the mid screen. Below it there’s a blue button “turn passcode on” but clicking on it doesn’t do anything. This happens with or without lock screen. I’ve tried removing cards and adding them for individually in case one card causes the issue, to no avail. Appreciate your help.

Some basic steps that can help would be restarting and making sure your iPhone is up to date with the steps from these links:


Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Restart your iPhone
