I have an iMac (M1 chip) and an LG optical drive. I can listen to CDs on my iMac. However, when I try to copy a song or the entire CD I get error -54
You need to import the CD into the Apple Music App.

If you are using the built-in Music (MacOS) app click on Help (menu bar) and search for CD, there you will find instructions on how to import songs from a CD. It also includes help with problems. If you are using a third party app this may not be compatible.
You may have run up against DRM ... Digital Rights Management. DRM's purpose is to restrict, if not eliminate, certain copying functions to protect "digital rights" and ownerships.
