Display iPad content on a TV (with no WiFi)

We are off camping our RV without WiFi, and often watch Netflix movies I have downloaded on my iPad. The screen is small so I'd like to display these movies on my TV.

I bought a Knock-off Lightning to Digital AV adapter from Amazon for ~$15 but it won't work (won't display anything let alone a Netflix movie....could this be a "cheap" HDMI cable issue??

So I'm considering buying the $49 Apple version because it is supposed to pass the "pirate-protected" data.

Am I wasting my money?

Well...it turns out to be much more complicated.

First, the $16 Lightning Digital to AV Converter from Amazon doesn't work at all.

The official $50 Apple Converter works to pass anything (including streamed Netflix & Prime videos) BUT, it will not pass any downloaded videos. Apparently this is a "Pirate Protection" issue (so called HDCP)

My objective is to project downloaded Netflix & Prime videos from my iPad to my large TV screen while boon docking (no WiFi).

To do that, one must purchase an AC powered HDMI Splitter, and insert it between the Converter and the TV.

In other words, Connect the the Converter to my iPad at the Lightning port, connect an HDMI cable from the converter to the HDMI Splitter input, and another HDMI cable from the Splitter output to the TV HDMI input.

Apparently the HDMI Splitter completely bypasses the HDCP issue.

Hopefully, this helps others who have been experiencing this same problem

Hi Don Kurtz,

Thank you for contacting Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it seems like there is trouble connecting the iPad to the TV with a Lightning Digital AV Adapter. One way to isolate would be to try using a different adapter and also try using a different TV and a different HDMI cable too.

"Connect your iPad if it has a Lightning connector

On a model with a Lightning connector, do the following:

  1. Plug a Lightning Digital AV Adapter or Lightning to VGA Adapter into the charging port on iPad.
  2. Connect an HDMI or VGA cable to the adapter.
  3. Connect the other end of the HDMI or VGA cable to the display, TV, or projector.
  4. If necessary, switch to the correct video source on the display, TV, or projector. If you need help, see the manual that came with your display."
