How do I prevent deleted emails from downloading on new iphone 12 mini?

I successfully transferred data from old to new iphone, except MAIL. I have 499 downloads in my inbox, most of which were previously deleted. How do I stop that from continuing? AND is there anyone to delete a bunch of emails at once?
